After leaving Hawaii they gifted their guitars to the “paniolo”, the Hawaiian cowboys.ĭuring King David Kalakaua 1883 coronation, he combined the adopted Spanish acoustic guitar, Portuguese ukulele and native instruments to accompany hula dancers and ancient chanters. With them came the acoustic guitar and their musical styles. In 1832, he brought vaqueros from Mexico and Spain to teach cattle and ranch management to native Hawaiians. King David Kalakaua was also responsible for the the popularity of the slack key guitar. It symbolically became connected with royalty, sovereignty and “aloha aina”, the love of the land. The stringed instrument was modified and constructed with koa, monkey pod, mango and other native woods.
In 1886, Augusto Dias, Manuel Nunes and Jose do Espirito Santo were responsible for teaching King Kalakaua to play and construct the first koa wood ukulele. With its overwhelming popularity and close ties to King Kalakaua, three Portuguese men produced the first ukuleles in Hawaii. The four stringed ukulele was rapidly accepted by the native Hawaiians. King David Kalakaua, a highly skilled musician and the royal advocate for preserving Hawaiian language, hula, chants, folklore and music, made the ukulele the national instrument. Since then, the ukulele has been adapted from the original “Machete de Braga”. In 1879, the small wooden stringed instrument was first heard in Honolulu as the Portuguese celebrated their safe arrival to Hawaii. The ukulele, also known as the ‘jumping flea’, was introduced by immigrants from Madeira of the Portuguese archipelago. This is commonly heard in recordings by popular Hawaiian music artists Amy Hanaiali’i, Keali’i Reichel, Israel Kamakawiwoʻole and other amazing vocalists. The vocalists combine their lyrics to the ukulele, acoustic guitar, mandolin and slack key guitar. Lyrical interpretations incorporate chants, falsetto, historical folklore, Hawaiian language and English. Historically, these instruments are symbolic to Hawaiian music. The slack key guitar and ukulele are historically responsible for the unique musical blends. What is it that sets Hawaiian music apart from other types of music?
